“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. - Mohandas K. Gandhi
I believe it to be true that our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Through all the research I had done regarding women and heart disease, the impact I experienced when I learned of the PMU mare and her foals life (and death) experience was more than enough to deter me from my task at hand. I knew I could not look away from what I had seen and learned about. What caused even more concern for me was learning about the horse slaughter industry that is thriving right here in Canada and below the US border in Mexico. Banning of horse slaughter in the United States has not in any way stopped the slaughter of horses in North America and now poses an even larger problem. Horses destined to slaughter now have to endure the transport to either Canada or Mexico which can be a crippling and debilitating experience...if they arrive alive. Action Alert - Oct 20, 2008 CFIA and Horse Welfare Investigations Demanded!! Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Presses for Investigation into Animal Welfare Violations at Saskatchewan Horse Slaughter Plant. ~ Voice for the Horse (We are happy to let you know that Angel now proudly resides in Langley, B.C. which has long been known as the "Horse Capital" of British Columbia. With more than 400 farms in the area that have produced almost 5000 horses, there are more horses in Langley than in any other community in the province. It is wonderful to see so many horse lovers on the West Coast and it shows by all the fine facilities out there caring for our equine companions! Click here to visit The Langley Horse Federation web site. To share with viewers some of the amazing things our horses do for us we would like to note the winning of the Gold Medal from the 2008 Paralympics and another amazing feat has been the the ride that Kimber Sider completed across Canada. We met Kimber today (Oct 3, 2008), one day away from her destination which was an undisclosed place on a beach in White Rock! Congratulations to both her and Katrina! I invite you all to learn more about their journey One Women & One Horse and 6000+km of Canada to Cross!
Kimber & Katrina Less than one year ago, Angel arrived in Langley from Manitoba. On Oct 4th, 2008 we once again welcomed two young colts, both from the same feedlot with the same destiny that Angel had, until she was rescued and given a chance for a good life. Lucky for her, things evolved in her favor! And lucky also, for these two young ones, taken in by Margaret Edwards-Jones of Langley, B. C. who also rescued our Little Angel. These weanlings were rescued with the intent to do just that; to rescue them as Angel had been, so they too could get a chance for a good life and eventually sell to good homes, as they make great pleasure and riding horses. We certainly can't keep them all however people like Margaret are making the difference by taking them first hand from these feed lots and promoting these horses as quality equines, built to stand up and excel in many different disciplines. If you are interested or know of anyone that might be interested in purchasing one of the two yearlings pictured below or any of the others available, please contact Margaret at Quest Farms. With hay prices sky-rocketing this year, especially in some of our eastern provinces, many more horses are at risk of being shipped to feed lots due to horse owners not being able to afford these high prices. Voice For The Horse has learned that this is now a growing concern and is asking viewers of this site to consider what it might mean for you "in your life" to support a horse by either adopting, supporting a rescue center or even taking on a new hobby that could be life changing! Horses today play very important and powerful roles which we have already shared with you. Equine Facilitated Therapies has also become very popular and in demand. This even includes in our corporate world and horses like these have much to teach, I promise you this!
For Sale ~ Colt #1 SOLD!! ~ Colt #2 Having Faith ~ Amazing story about a small community reaching out to save the life of one horse...a horse that many would have put down with the condition that Faith arrived in. On Feb 5, 2008, Critteraid got a call from a lady named Maria Winser who needed some advice and help with a horse. The horse had appeared in her driveway in the Marron Valley between Penticton and Keremeos and had collapsed on the other side of the cattle guard. The horse, a mare, was emaciated beyond belief. Her frail body was literally frozen to the ground with a thin sheet of ice. Marias husband, Darrel, an experienced horseman, would have been prepared to relieve the animal from this misery she was going through by shooting her if she were one of his own. I think we all would do that for our own animals. But, enter serendipity, and Maria gently worked this horse through that hell and with numerous trips back and forth for warm water, she got her to drink and managed to unfreeze her from the ground without causing any panic. Offered hay was taken and the connection that Maria made with this horse was fiercely strong.
