Having Faith ~ Amazing story about a small community reaching out to save the life of one horse...a horse that many would have put down with the condition that Faith arrived in. On Feb 5, 2008, Critteraid got a call from a lady named Maria Winser who needed some advice and help with a horse. The horse had appeared in her driveway in the Marron Valley between Penticton and Keremeos and had collapsed on the other side of the cattle guard. The horse, a mare, was emaciated beyond belief. Her frail body was literally frozen to the ground with a thin sheet of ice. Marias husband, Darrel, an experienced horseman, would have been prepared to relieve the animal from this misery she was going through by shooting her if she were one of his own. I think we all would do that for our own animals. But, enter serendipity, and Maria gently worked this horse through that hell and with numerous trips back and forth for warm water, she got her to drink and managed to unfreeze her from the ground without causing any panic. Offered hay was taken and the connection that Maria made with this horse was fiercely strong. April 6, 2009 - Natural Meat Company (formerly Natural Valley Farms) in Neudorf, Saskatchewan, closed its doors in mid-February. No more horses are being slaughtered in that facility According to the Director of Parliamentary Affairs for Canada, Natural Meat Company was shut down by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for food safety concerns. As a horse lover from the time I made my entry into this world, I can relate with the experience Alexa had with Horsey Love. Although It was far too soon for Alexa to leave her loved ones, I hope to offer as a condolence to her family and friends, that she gained much wisdom and compassion from the time she did spend with Horsey Love. Horses are amazing teachers, especially for us people today. Alexa and Horsey Love communicated in a way that may be difficult for many of us to understand, however there relationship was of shared simple truths and love, that was all very real. I know this as I am still blessed everyday to share the time I do with two of my own horses that have taught me so very much.  On October 31st, 2006 a herd of horses was stranded by rising water levels on a small plot of land in the Netherlands after a heavy storm. As the days stretched on people feared for the lives of more than one hundred horses! See this dramatic video footage of their daring rescue by four woman.

Angel was rescued from a feedlot in Manitoba last fall by a kind soul and sent out to a friend of mine in Vancouver this past January. When I first met her (which was totally unplanned by the way) I just happened to have a few extra bucks in my pocket and said I would take her. It just felt like the right thing to do. Angel was just eight months old and still quite abit wild. Angel loved the Lavender Essential Oil I introduced her to and when it was time to leave for me to leave her our first day together, she was yawning and going to sleep, just the way I like it! Most recently we are hearing that the PMU Industry has basically come to a close in Canada. This information comes from sources in Manitoba where Angel was rescued from and also Mischief, a recently rescued PMU foal. With the Premarin® industry not being in demand so much anymore, the recent hay shortage and the more challenging economic times, this strained industry has gone so far as to take all PMU mares and any by-product foals to auction where more often than not, end up on feedlots and then slaughtered. This has even included pregnant mares which has saddened our hearts greatly. On the upside we can know that the industry is now done and there need not be any more suffering for these poor horses.
