July 23, 2010 News Release ~The Province ~ It was a great relief for many horse lovers as news spread as quickly as wildfire that 30 Thoroughbred's in the Interior of B.C. were rescued which avoided their destiny of going to slaughter. Within 24 hours nearly all the horses were purchased for a minimal price to cover their cost. Something definetly is happening out there for the horses in that more and more individuals are paying closer attention to this industry that has been so hard hit by the economic turn down and are seeing the value of a horse outside of the racing industry as it is in this case.
VFTH is pleased that this collective effort for the rescue of these fine horses was acknowledged by the Mayor of Surrey, B.C. Canada; Ms. Diane Watts. Her comments are noted on the following link. May 7, 2010 ~ BC SPCA Report On Horse Slaughter In Canada
The BC SPCA and the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies have presented federal authorities with a report of concerns regarding horse slaughter in Canada. The Report on Horse Slaughter Practices in Canada (link opens pdf document) is based on a review of recent video footage depicting inhumane practices at two of Canada's largest horse slaughter plants, one in Alberta and one in Quebec. Approximately 100,000 horses are slaughtered in Canada each year to produce meat for human consumption, most of which is exported to European countries. This figure has doubled since operations at American horse slaughter plants were suspended in recent years. Click here to view the BC SPCA web site and to view horses for adoption. Today State Representative Jim Sacia (R - Freeport) pulled his bill to legalize horse slaughter from the agenda for this legislative session. The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) appreciates his recognition of horse slaughter as a controversial issue and his decision to withdraw it from consideration. This was the third time in as many years that Representative Sacia had introduced legislation aimed at overturning the state’s widely supported ban on horse slaughter. In the two previous years, the House voted against his proposal. Support for maintaining the ban remains strong with the Illinois General Assembly and the Governor.
“We are much relieved by Representative Sacia’s decision today. We look forward to working together with all the members of the Illinois General Assembly on ways to improve the welfare of horses in the state.” said Chris Heyde, deputy director of Government and Legal Affairs for AWI. "We are looking at positive options and slaughtering them is certainly not the right step."

Fabulous Musical Ride Wows The Crowd!
The final equestrian show performed by the RCMP Musical Ride on August 31, 2010 most certainly was a crowd pleaser! How fortunate we are to have such a dedicated team of RCMP Members that are up for the challenge to learn the skills of a seasoned equestrian rider in such a short period of time. It is obvious that Canadians are true lovers of the horse, especially after seeing a performance of this calibre! The families that attend the shows have the opportunity for their children to meet the horses afterwards and this is a very positive environment for the children to learn about the horse as the officers share their stories of their horses with all due respect. Way to go Canada for showing those of us in this country and beyond what is possible with the horse; not only the athletic abilities both derive from the rigorous training they endure together, but the relationship, experience and trust they develop together. click here to read the full article from the Province, August 31,2010 ~ Fabulous Musical Ride Wows Crowd
