Hello everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that at 1:55pm, today, Wednesday March 3, 2010, Hilary’s soul crossed over to the other world ~ she was 30 years old.
It was a very difficult decision to make, but over the past few months, she had a difficult time getting up and the last time, it took 4 of us over 4 hours to get her up again. So we knew the next time, we would have to make the difficult decision to put her to rest. We found her laying down late yesterday afternoon so we let her go through the night. (Mike was in Vancouver, and I wanted him to say good-bye ~ he got home at 2am). She was warm and peaceful laying her head on my lap, the moon was high and bright and she died peacefully in the beautiful sunshine today. She is now in her final resting place with a view of the mountain and the lake. For those who've gotten to know her, she was the best horse anyone could have. Both Mike and I have learnt a lot from her. The horse is my spirit animal and we will never forget her. And she loved all the little kids who got to ride her.
A friend has moved her horse here temporarily for Gucci ~ it’s a gelding (fixed male) but she is quite happy with this new little dude. His name is Cad, short for Cadillac. But we have to find a more permanent solution. We are blessed to have found wonderful people in our new community, everything went smoothly but our hearts and heavy, we will need a few days to grieve our loss.
Hilary’s story is on a few websites if you are interested (under testimonials) www.witsendfarms.com (Hilary & Gucci) ~ www.rivasremedies.com ~ (Marie & Hilary) - www.ateasehorsecare.com ~ also published in Horse Canada magazine. And many thanks go to Ann & Anthony, Marijke, Yvonne and Kirsten. Without their support, Hilary wouldn't have lived another 4 years of happiness and good health.
In love and light,
Mike & Marie
On the morning of Monday, February 8, 2010 I found Missy a bit out of sorts and refusing her feed. I kept her walking and called our vet. He came as soon as he cold and treated her for colic. We kept a good eye on her throughout the day and she seemed to improve. I kept checking her regularly throughout the night and upon my last check she was not at all well. She was pacing the fence line and appeared to be in a great deal f pain. I held her close and massaged her until the vet came again ~ this was about 11:30 pm. He treated her once again for colic and then she started failing fast. There was no time to take her to a clinic ffor treatment. By now she was wheezing and in the most terrible of pain. therefore we made the only decision possible which was to put her down. Our vet did the best he could, I know that.
Missy was healthy and happy Sunday and we enjoyed our ride ~ turned out to be our last. The dreams I had for her, gone. No stallion, no running in the pastures of our new Kootenay home and no foal. How I miss her knickering to me, galloping up to us on a whistle, playing hid and seek with my husband. Truely, she was the best horse I ever had. Smart, lively and loving. Loved and admired by all who knew her. She, in her own horsey way, gave me comfort whe we lost our son. She was so healthy and happy. It was one thing to have an old crippled horse down ~ but this?
I would like to think God has a special place for horses like her. Perhaps, in good time, He, in his wisdom, will send another mare such as her, to me. I am so sad today.
