"The Greatness Of A Nation And It's Moral Progress Can Be Judged By The Way It's Animal's Are Treated" ~ Mohandas K. Ghandi
A note from Voice For The Horse to Potential Sponsors and Parents of Children that will be actively involved in the first Annual VFTH Children's Writing Competition 2011:
All graphic content and links to graphic content will be taken off our web site during the Children's Writing Competition. While we feel it is important that children are aware of the circumstances that horses endure when they become unwanted by their owners, we do not wish for children to see such graphic videos and pictures of where not only our domesticated and often family owned equines go, but our many wild horses that once roamed free on the range. It is hard enough for us to look at this content but this is "the why"Voice For the Horse exists today. If we are unaware of this highly unpublisized way in which horses are handled prior to going to a kill buyer (often neglected already) we will not fully understand the extent in which this problem exists.
Thank You ~ Voice For The Horse

It is with a conscious mind and heart that I am choosing to bring forth details of the part of the equestrian industry which inspired me to start the writing of Voice For The Horse back in 2007. I call it the hard side due to the pain and suffering that is inflicted upon our horses when rendered or become unwanted and of those that then travel the long road to slaughter which in North America, only exist in Canada and of course south of the USA border, Mexico. Although not pertinent information that children will be studying during for the Children’s Writing Competition, it has just so happened that there has been a huge uprising of many disturbed voices across both Canada and the United States at this time brought on by The Food Network promoting The Top Chef TV Series to cook horse meat on their television program which was aired on May 16, 2011.
Please note: The following content contains graphic content and is not suitable for your child to view (many adults have a hard time with this as well). If you are a child and you come cross this web site page, please exit this page and let your parents know that you did so. Thank You!! Better yet ... here is a great idea click on this link and go and visit Kid's Corner!! and tell your parents you did so !!
Much had been written on this subject well before the airing of this Top Chef TV Show and in many ways I am thinking that because it was aired, it ultimately was meant to be as now the awareness has become even bigger for horses that go to slaughter and also of the meat product that is being produced from many of our slaughtered horses from across North America. Even though many letters were sent into The Food Network in regards to the many toxicities of horse meat, they still chose to oversee this and aired the show anyways, not to mention the neglectful ways horses are treated enroute to their demise after their purchase from a kill buyer but then to the actual kill box, which is one of the most brutal and inhumane ways for a horse to be put down , to end their lives. The Top Chef and Sponsors of this show were fully informed by various organizations as well as by private individuals with these same concerns. For a full explanation of the concerns out there by many regarding the airing of this Top Chef's show, Simone Netherlands founder of Respect 4 Horses shares her Letter Written to Sponsor's and Production Team of The Top Chef (very informative and I encourage you to read it).

To help fully inform our viewers of our web site more on this subject, although quite dis-tasteful as it is, there has been much light brought to this subject by a woman who spent many years in research once she recognized how cows felt during their experience of going to slaughter house to be butchered. She found much stress with these cows and because of her enlightened ability to recognize this, developed specialized plans for slaughter houses where I understand that today near 50% of the slaughter houses in the United States that are slaughtering cows, switched up to her design, once convinced of a more humane method of treating the cows without much more of an expense to their business. Temple Grandin is this person and because of her diagnosed condition of autism at a very young age, it did not take long for others to note her unique ability to understand other living beings outside of humans that she could relate to and easily communicate with. We invite you to read an exerpt from Watch Out For The Precious Baby by Connie Funk who shares her thoughts on the work of Temple Grandin that has been well received by many
I invite you to meet and learn more about Temple Grandin and to also introduce you to my young autistic nephew Quinn, where we share with you his heart warming experience of meeting and spending time with VFTH Mascot’s Angel and Mischief. Click here to read more about Children Horse's and Autism
Upon realizing the dangers of eating carcinogenic horse meat which for many years was never monitored and is still very questionable today if it is, I would like to share with you a true story and experience that I had with my horse Five Sail’s. This story of me offering my horse a massage with a marketed horse liniment, well depicts the horse’s intuitiveness on a level which far exceeded mine back then, but then I had not read the label on this bottle of massage liniment stating “not intended to be used on horses for human consumption”. It is my hope that all of our viewers and readers of Voice For The Horse web site hold in their hearts and support the efforts of the so many individuals and organizations that are working hard to create the awareness that is needed out there of the hard side of the equestrian industry. There are answers to these problem however we feel that new laws need to be passed not only for the management of horses whose lives will end up at slaughter plants but also that one day laws will be passed for those sports where horses are only used as ways to bring money into the pockets of the owners eg) the Sport of Kings ~ Horse Racing. Some kind of responsibility must be taken to stop the insanity of horse breeders who simply just dispose of their young race horses who are more than likely toxic for human consumption but are still sold off to kill buyers so they do not have to carry on with the expenses and responsibilities of a horse that was not successful in their chosen sport. Discretion must be practiced for the breeding of all horses in today's time.
